SHAKOPEE — Amazon.com Inc. is planning to build a distribution center in the Twin Cities area that could eventually employ 1,000 people.

The online retailer is asking the city of Shakopee for about $5 million in tax breaks to build the 820,000-square-foot center and warehouse. A document filed with the city said the market value of the development would be about $55 million. Amazon wants to open the center early in 2017.

According to a press release, the 63-acre site in Shakopee is in an existing industrial park. Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke said the process for considering the tax breaks is just beginning. He said the distribution center would need significant improvements to the current infrastructure.
