HIBBING — The latest round of layoffs on the Iron Range involves salaried positions.
According to a press release, Cliff Natural Resources will eliminate about 100 employees at its Hibbing Taconite, Northshore Mining and United Taconite Iron Range operations. Union officials said the cuts do not involve any members.
The layoffs are the latest development in a downturn of the American steel industry that has hit hard on the Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota.
U.S. Steel recently announced it was cutting about 1,150 jobs at its Minntac plant in Mountain Iron and the Keetac facility in Keewatin. U.S. Steel cited high steel imports, dumping of foreign steel and low steel prices in making the move.
