Alice Gulbrandson, 1920-2015

Funeral services for Alice Gulbrandson, 94, of Albert Lea will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at East Freeborn Lutheran Church. The Rev. Matt Griggs will officiate. Interment will be at East Freeborn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Alice died Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea.
Alice Gulbrandson was born May 30, 1920, in New Richland, the daughter of Oscar and Clara (Knudson) Rugroden. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland. Alice graduated from New Richland High School and went on to graduate from Mankato Teachers College. She taught at Geneva, Lerdal and Hoidal schools. On Sept. 27, 1947, Alice was united in marriage to Howard Gulbrandson in New Richland. Alice continued substitute teaching for a short time at Lerdal school after her marriage. She was a member of East Freeborn Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, active in altar guild and quilting group, and was the head of the church library for many years. Alice enjoyed reading, working with flowers and playing cards with friends.
Survivors include her children Gary (Shelley) Gulbrandson, Greg (Vicki) Gulbrandson, James (Mary) Gulbrandson and John (Denise) Gulbrandson; grandchildren Denise (Scott) Merten, Kim (Kevin) Schumacher, Angela (Trey) Gulbrandson, Joshua Gulbrandson, Ann (Derek) Sternhagen, Kelly Gulbrandson, Candy (Rick) Fuzesy and Lee (Brooke) Gulbrandson; several step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Lorraine Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; grandson, Daniel Gulbrandson; great-granddaughter, Whitney, in infancy; and siblings Milford, George, Ingeborg and Viola.
Alice’s family would like to thank everyone at Good Samaritan Recovery Trail and Hidden Creek for the excellent care they provided for Alice.
Alice will be missed by her family and many friends.
