50 years ago: 1965

• Conger defeated First Lutheran 8-2 in a National Division game in the Albert Lea Fastpitch Church League. Lowell Doppelhammer allowed four hits and struck out 13 batters for Conger.

• In an American Division Church League game, Methodist defeated Baptist 8-1. The Methodist pitcher Don Rippentrop threw a three-hitter and had 13 strikeouts and their offense was led by Jim Cashman with 3 hits.

• Chuck Hinkley pitched a two-hitter for Freeborn High School in its 3-1 baseball win over Frost which gave Freeborn the Border League title with a 7-0 record.

• The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team defeated Faribault 5-2. Winning singles matches for the Tigers were Mike Kelly, Steve Urbatsch and Kurt Wilke. The doubles teams of Ken Stauch and Mike Kelly and the team of Mark Jensen and Emery Jensen also were winners.

 

25 years ago: 1990

• The No. 3-ranked in Class 2A Albert Lea girls’ golf team defeated Mankato West 199-212. Scores for the Tigers were Melissa Boom, 46; Lisa Christopherson and Kari Haanstad, 50; and Jodi Mack, 53.

• The Glenville-Emmons softball team was victorious over Blooming Prairie 9-3. Colleen Kral was the winning pitcher and had three hits.

• Freshman Phil Schmidt of the Albert Lea boys’ golf team was medalist with a 78 in the Tigers’ 317-338 win over Rochester John Marshall. Other scores for the Tigers were Steve Peterson, 80; Chad Holtan and Brian Rechtzigel, 87.

 

10 years ago: 2005

• The United South Central girls’ golf team raised its record to 7-0 with a 191-225 win over Granada-Huntley-East Chain. Scores for USC were Tiffany Adams, 43; Cassie Wood, 46; Ashley Tukua, 51; and Paige Porter, 52.

• The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team defeated Rochester John Marshall 4-3. Conner Keyeski at No. 2  and Jon Hatcher at No. 3 singles won their matches for the Tigers. The No. 1 doubles team of Andrew Dyrdal and Cory Deiser and the No. 2 team of Andrew Haatvedt and Josh Svendsen also won their matches.
