WELLS — Area Wells residents are fighting to raise cancer awareness.

The Wells Jaycees and an area committee are organizing the annual Save 2nd Base Charity Run as well as a fundraising event.

The 5k and 5-mile runs will start at 8:30 a.m. June 20, and both start and end at Thompson Park in Wells. Registration is $25 and the money will go to the cancer center at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea. Interested participants can register through the Wells Jaycees Facebook page or can register the day of the run.

Run volunteer Crystal Dulas said the run raised about $1,500 last year, and that this year’s goal is around $2,500.

“Each year we try to get bigger,” she said.

The run is in conjunction with the Save 2nd Base event which will be the following weekend.

Dulas said the run was started four years ago when the area wanted to find a worthy cause to run for. Breast cancer and other types of cancer were the first to come to mind, especially after hearing about the Wells Save 2nd Base committee.

“Breast cancer awareness is big,” she said. “It’s important to a lot of people.”
