To Eddie Cochran Weekend.
You know it’s summer in Albert Lea when classic car enthusiasts pull their vehicles out of storage and start driving them around town. This weekend these same enthusiasts, from both in and outside of town, gathered for the annual Eddie Cochran Weekend events. Thanks to everyone who organizes this weekend and for everyone who participates. It’s great to see all the activity in the community from it.
To no signs of contamination found in the Twin Lakes drinking water.
It was a little bit of a scare this week to find out that there had been mercury and diesel fuel spills in a former power plant in Twin Lakes. We applaud the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, who immediately responded to the concerns and have coordinated efforts to clean up that site. Crews removed five pounds of mercury found in the plant and on Thursday pulled up tiles from an office that read high for mercury contamination. The MPCA is also coming up with a plan to pump several feet of water and diesel fuel out of the basement of the building. Though it may still be a long process before these concerns are resolved, we recognize all the hard work that is being taken to take care of them as fast as possible.
To the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.
We applaud rural Albert Lea resident Katie Pestorious and other volunteers who helped organize the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on Wednesday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. While the event taught about safety in a few agriculture-related fields, it also talked about other topics such as first aid, chemical safety, electrical safety and sun safety, to name a few. About 60 children participated. As Pestorious said the day of the event, this can help save lives.
To multiple break-ins reported.
Whether it has been automobiles, homes, garages or storage units, there sure seems to have been a lot of break-ins in Albert Lea in the last few weeks. Please remember to lock your vehicles and leave valuable possessions out of plain sight. If you see anything suspicious in your neighborhood, don’t hesitate to call the Albert Lea Police Department.
