Minnesota community goes all solar

COLOGNE — A small community in Carver County said it’s the first city in Minnesota to go all solar.
The city of Cologne has signed a deal with energy developer SunShare to offset all of its municipal electricity with solar power.
The city of 1,500 will subscribe to a community solar garden at the nearby Bongards cheese plant. The city’s share of the solar garden — or about 2,700 panels — will generate during sunny days more power than the city needs for municipal purposes. The extra solar power goes on the grid and offsets electricity the city draws at other times from Xcel Energy.
City leaders expect to save more than $1 million on the deal over 25 years.
More than a dozen other cities in Minnesota have installed solar projects on a smaller scale.
