BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Two bodies were recovered Wednesday from the wreckage of a small plane from Minnesota that crashed in northern Washington state, a sheriff said.

The plane’s tail registration number matches that of an aircraft reported missing from Minnesota, Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo said.

A man and woman from Kabetogama, Minnesota, were reportedly aboard the plane, which is believed to have crashed Saturday. It was reported overdue on a flight to Orcas Island in Washington’s San Juan Islands.

Search pilots spotted the wreckage earlier Wednesday on Twin Sisters Mountain, about 10 miles east of Acme, Washington, in a remote, rugged area.

Elfo said aerial photos of the site showed debris spread over a large area.

The couple aboard the plane were on vacation and weren’t on a strict schedule, said Barbara LaBoe, a Washington state Transportation Department spokeswoman. Relatives reported the plane missing Tuesday evening after trying unsuccessfully to contact the couple, she said.

Elsewhere in Washington, search crews recovered two bodies Wednesday from the wreckage of a small airplane that crashed into another Washington state mountainside over the weekend. A teenager who survived the impact hiked off a rugged slope to safety and was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Deputies and volunteers who reached that wreckage in north-central Washington found it burned out and smoldering.

Those two victims haven’t been formally identified, but 16-year-old survivor Autumn Veatch of Bellingham has said her step-grandparents, Leland and Sharon Bowman of Marion, Montana, were killed in the crash.

The plane, piloted by Leland Bowman, was bringing Veatch home from a Montana visit.

LaBoe said the two flights weren’t related.
