MINNEAPOLIS — A 17-year-old boy charged in the beating death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter in Minneapolis is fighting prosecutors’ efforts to have him tried as an adult.

The teen’s attorney said during a brief Thursday court appearance that he’s challenging Hennepin County to keep the case in juvenile court. The teen is charged with second-degree murder in the June death of Sophia O’Neill.

Authorities allege the teen kicked the girl in the back while trying “to get her to stop” crying, and then laid her on the floor and stomped on her back.

According to the medical examiner, the girl had a torn liver, kidney and pancreas, as well as a collapsed lung and broken ribs.

A judge said Thursday that a psychological evaluation for the teen is complete, but did not give further information.
