GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP — Sheriff’s officials said a boater from Wisconsin has drowned in a northeastern Minnesota lake.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department said 58-year-old Richard Dziewit, of Greendale, Wisconsin, was apparently thrown from a boat on Lake Vermilion Monday night.

Two people in another boat spotted Dziewit treading water about 8 p.m. while his boat was spinning circles around him.

Authorities said the two people were able to pull Dziewit’s boat away from him, but he disappeared under water. Searchers recovered his body about 2 1/2 hours later.
