MINNEAPOLIS — Hundreds of claims have been filed alleging clergy abuse as the court deadline comes to a close in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis bankruptcy case.
Attorneys have counted more than 400 claims filed by Monday, the deadline imposed by a bankruptcy court judge as the archdiocese reorganizes its finances.
The court will continue to assess the archdiocese’s assets and determine how many claims might be covered by insurance. According to a press release, the archdiocese and its insurers will review the claims and a victims fund will be set up to finance the settlement of the claims.
The flood of claims stems from a state law which lifted the statute of limitations on older claims of abuse. The claims prompted the archdiocese to file bankruptcy earlier this year.
