FARIBAULT — A Minnesota man strangled and cut the throat of a suicidal Ohio woman he met online, according to a second-degree murder charge filed Monday.
The criminal complaint filed in Rice County District Court said Chelsea Martinez, 26, of Columbus, Ohio, traveled to the southern Minnesota city of Faribault to meet Jason Robert Nisbit, 39, to talk about suicide, according to a press release.
Martinez and Nisbit met at a motel July 31 and agreed to meet the next morning, the complaint said. They drove separately to a park where they parked near a beach, then walked to a wooded area about 10 to 15 minutes away where Nisbitt bound her hands and feet with parachute cord, strangled her with another piece of cord until she lost consciousness, then cut her throat with a knife with a 10-inch blade.
Nisbit chose the area because he knew he’d have access to water in case he needed to wash anything off, the complaint said. He lost his glasses while dragging Martinez to a culvert where he covered her body with dirt, it said.
A Rice County deputy spotted Martinez’ car at the park on Aug. 3 with the keys in the ignition and the driver side windows down. Investigators then learned she had been in contact online with Nisbit.
Under questioning, the complaint said, Nisbit admitted to killing Martinez and led them to her body and the knife. His glasses were found in the area.
The complaint does not discuss motives. According to reports Martinez’ sister reported her missing Aug. 1 after seeing a Facebook post indicating she was suicidal. Her husband, Oscar Martinez, told the newspaper he thought she was going to visit a friend in Akron. He also said his wife had problems with depression and had talked about suicide before.
Bail was set at $1 million during Nisbit’s initial court appearance Monday. Online court records don’t list an attorney who could comment for him.
