Glenville American Legion

The American Legion Auxiliary held their 96th state convention from July 16 to 18 in Redwood Falls.

Members from the Glenville Legion Auxiliary No. 264 were Judy Nelson, Georgann Trytten, Arlene Hajek, Cindy Nelson and Darlene Hengestag. Sandy Frederickson, from the Glenville Legion Auxiliary, was elected department auxiliary president.

Department Junior President Jules Efta brought greetings from the junior auxiliary. Also bringing greetings was the 2015 Governor of Minnesota Girls State, Sarah Burch. There were about 450 auxiliary members registered for the convention.

The Glenville Auxiliary meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. The group invites all members and new members to come to our meetings. The next meeting will be Sept. 14.

 

First Lutheran Church Women

First Lutheran Church Women met for brunch at 9:15 a.m. Aug. 12 in Bethany Hall. Co-President Joyce Fredin welcomed everyone after which the group sang the table prayer.

Virginia Hermanson gave devotions on prayer which was speaking to God from the heart. The group’s chief prayer book is the Psalms.

Fredin led the reciting of the FLCW Purpose Statement and introduced the Rev. John and Joan Holt who provided the music. They sang several beautiful, delightful selections including “A Child’s Nighttime Prayer,” Side by Side,” their version of “When I’m 64” and “Bond of Love.”

Sandy Narverud introduced our speaker Bev Jackson Cotter, who grew up in the church. Previously the executive director of the Albert Lea historical museum for 18 years, she is now very involved at the Art Center. Her topic was “Seasons,” and she displayed an interesting four-season tree created by paper cutting. Elaborating on the seasons of life, she emphasized that as people get older, the need to feel valuable, that they have a place.

Business meeting: The secretary’s report was approved as printed with a motion by Nancy Jenson and seconded by Bonnie Trampel. The report will be placed on file for audit.

Correspondence Secretary Trampel had received thank yous from Good Earth, the FLC radio fund and the Raymond Thompson family for serving the funeral and two invitations from Ascension Lutheran Church Women’s Guest Night at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 and an appreciation event on the Pelican Breeze sponsored by Youth for Christ. Brochures were received from Teen Challenge, Plymouth Christian Youth Center, Nepal earthquake update, Bibles for the World, Lutheran Social Service and Feed My Starving Children.

Diane Damerow reported on the school kits project for the Lutheran World Relief Ingathering this fall. She and Janice Lestrud are working with Jenny Edwin to make this an intergenerational activity involving children in Sunday school and in confirmation. The list of supplies is the same; they should be donated by the end of September.

Donna Ludtke gave the offering prayer.

Fredin thanked the following: ushers, Gen Montei and Arlis Smith; greeters, Lorraine Fjelstad, Ludtke and Neva Mathison; hostesses, chairwomen Janice Brandt and Kathy Olson and their committee, Lorraine Browman, Rhodette Groe, Betty Gulbrandson, Maxine Hanson, Marge Moine and Joanne Williamson.

Caring and Sharing: Co-chairwomen Bonnie Schneider and Helene Westrum and their committee served four funerals in July.

Announcements: The FLCW Program Pioneer Day will be at 1:15 p.m. Sept. 9 in Bethany Hall. A piano concert by Tim O’Shields to benefit the 2016 Jessica Lokken Summer School of Music and Arts will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at First Lutheran Church Sanctuary. Tickets are available in church office, the Gathering Space and from WMA members. Rally Day will be at 10:30 a.m. in Bethany Hall. Sept. 27 is Confirmation Sunday. The group closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer.

 

St. John’s Auxiliary

St. John’s Auxiliary met at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 17 in St. John’s chapel. Vice-President Les Harmon welcomed everyone and gave devotions. The group sang the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” accompanied by Irene Goskeson.

Treasurer LeAnn Knutson gave the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports. The reports were approved.

Volunteer coordinator Carla Reichel reported that there were 976 volunteer hours for July, 14 day care hours and 3 You & Me Clubs. She also announced the activities planned for September. Sept. 1 is L.A. Sasse, Sept. 3 is Charlie Reed, Sept. 4 is Jonny Bird Music, Sept. 8 is Back 2 School, Sept. 9 is Wine Down Wednesday, Sept. 10 is Chris Von Arx, Sept. 11 is Cletus Goldirsch Music, Sept. 12 is County Music with Dunnell, Sept. 20 is St. John’s Auxiliary Fundraiser Lunch from 11 to 1 p.m. and Sept. 24 is Kent Larson.

Harmon read the names of residents celebrating August birthdays and everyone sang the birthday song.

Churches thanked for serving Sunday coffee were East Freeborn, Ascension and Grace Lutheran.

The program was provided by Diane Wichmann who showed slides of St. John’s history and also the new building project currently underway.

The meeting was adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer and the Table Prayer.
