Thanks for a great summer

Hats off to all who worked so hard to make our Freeborn County Fair another memorable week. It brings back the “kid” in all of us. Families get together and couples, young and old, are holding hands and smiling. Those big buildings were full of garden flowers, baked goods, quilts, happy winners of blue and purple ribbons and the food stands had choices to delight everyone. Outstanding people in the community are recognized for hours of volunteering, talents of every kind are displayed and oh, the crazy rides!

When Mike Woitas announced the color guard, and the two ladies sang the National Anthem so beautifully, we were ready to be entertained. There was a special surprise on stage the fourth night when a brave young fellow went to one knee and proposed to his girl who had just sung the National Anthem. The country western stars entertained packed grandstands every night. They all mentioned how great the Albert Lea audiences were as they swayed their cell phone lights to the music. Some mentioned they were loud, but the teenagers love that. I have to admit I wore ear plugs, but I was there every night and especially enjoyed the Josh Turner program with all of the background stage picture lighting.

Summer in Albert Lea began with the fine Memorial Day ceremony, then the Third of July Parade, then super Fourth of July fireworks, which brings the people together on land and lake. A cast of about 50 presented “South Pacific” and packed the Marion Ross place. Thanks to all who pitched in to make another great Freeborn County Fair and a memorable summer in Albert Lea.
