COURTENAY, N.D. (AP) — Xcel Energy has broken ground on a 200-megawatt wind farm south of Courtenay.

KOVC-AM reports that the 100 wind turbines will generate enough electricity to power 105,000 homes and generate about $850,000 annually in tax revenue.

The North Dakota Public Service Commission had given Xcel permission to buy the project from Edina, Minnesota-based Geronimo Energy. Xcel had already been planning to buy the energy from the project.

More than 60 landowners agreed to lease 25,000 acres of their land for the $300 million project. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
