50 years ago: 1965
• Albert Lea High School graduate Jeff Brooke was elected captain of the Northwestern University football team. Jeff lettered the last two years on defense and shifted to the offensive line for the 1965 season.
• The Wells High School football team defeated Waseca 25-12 with Tim Colby rushing for two touchdowns and two touchdown passes from Hassing to Prange.
• The Albert Lea football team was defeated by Winona 21-6. Brad Rinsem scored for the Tigers.
• Dan Roberts rushed for 200 yards for Glenville in its 25-13 victory over Emmons. The Eagles were led by Jim Lair who scored two touchdowns and gained 200 yards.
25 years ago: 1990
• Derek Fleek intercepted a third-quarter pass and ran 70 yards for the winning score in No. 10-ranked Albert Lea’s 18-13 win over Mankato West. Chad Bohonek scored on a six-yard touchdown rush and gained 121 yards in 20 carries. Paul Bisek also scored for the Tigers.
• The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team won three matches by a score of 6-1 in the Rosemount Tournament. Kelly Laumann, Kari Haanstad and Vicki Oliver each were 3-0 in the tournament.
• Brian Brekke scored three touchdowns and rushed for 101 yards on 31 carries for the NRHEG in its 20-0 shutout win over Alden-Conger-Freeborn.
10 years ago: 2005
• The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team defeated Mankato West 3-1. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Amanda Arends, Kendra Olchefske and Whitney Wilson.
• In the 78th Annual Shortstop Golf Tournament in Albert Lea, Mike Nelson defeated Mick Hockinson to win the championship flight.
• Justin Kester scored two touchdowns and Peter Brekken, one, to lead the Lake Mills football team to a 22-7 win over Northwood-Kensett. Matt Bloomingdale scored for the Vikings.
• Betty Ellertson of Albert Lea scored a hole-in-one on the 13th hole at Green Lea Golf Course.
