50 years ago: 1965
• The Albert Lea football team defeated Owatonna 35-20. Scoring touchdowns for the Tigers were Terry Gilbertson, two, Dick Wayne, Brad Rinsea and Tim Paske.
• Stan Olson and Maury Hope scored touchdowns to lead the Lake Mills football team to a 14-13 win over Osage. The win raised the Bulldogs’ North Iowa Conference record to 2-0.
• The Emmons Eagles football team won their first Border League football game after five straight losses when they defeated Delavan 13-6. John Lair scored both Eagles touchdowns.
• Frank Quillic singled in two runs in the eighth inning for the Minnesota Twins in their 5-3 win over Washington.
25 years ago: 1990
• The Albert Lea football team defeated Austin 15-13 to raise its season record to 3-1. Darren Lerud caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lynn Kermes, and Chad Bohonek scored on a three-yard run for the Tigers.
• The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team defeated Faribault 105.5-78.5. First-place finishes for Albert Lea included Leah Mattson in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, Jenny Polis in the 50 freestyle, Amy Beese in diving and Danielle Broskoff in the 100 breaststroke.
• The Alden-Conger-Freeborn volleyball team shut out Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 3-0 by scores of 15-4, 15-4 and 15-3. Kim Erickson was 17-for-17 serving, and Kim McKean was 12-for-12 for Alden-Conger-Freeborn.
10 years ago: 2005
• The United South Central girls’ tennis team improved to 8-0 for the season after defeating Rochester Century 5-2. Winning singles matches for USC were Rebecca Leland and Cassie Wood and winners in doubles matches were Kim Staloch and Marie Halvorson at No. 1, Kallie Rollenhagen and Ashley Wermedal at No. 2 and Tiffany Adams and Amanda Redman at No. 3.
• Josh Svedson, Zach McGinnis and Kyle Kirsch scored goals for the Albert Lea soccer team in a 3-0 win over Faribault.
• The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team rolled over St. Peter 102-83. Winners for the Tigers were Amanda Walters in the 100 backstroke, Leah Matheson in the 100 breaststroke, Samantha Cole in the 50 and 100 free, Rachael Hagen in the 200 and 500 free and Jackie Elwood in the 100 butterfly.
