The Nice Advice, By Leah Albert
Dear Leah,
I have an unusual problem. Well, I’m not sure it’s even a problem. Things have been going really well for me lately, and I’m not sure how to handle it. I’ve had a tough life. I’ve always worked hard, and I’ve never given up. I’m used to coping with crisis after crisis, and preparing myself for the worst. Well it seems I’ve worked my way right out of crisis. Right out of poverty.
We have food in the fridge. We have money left over every pay period. I’m even making plans to buy a new car! I made the decision a few months ago to stop dating and focus my energy on myself and my home. It seems like since then, things have just taken off.
My issue is this: I don’t know how to accept this is real life. I feel like it’s all going to fall apart, or I’m going to mess it up. Help!
Signed, Pinch Me! Is this Real?
Dear Real,
Congratulations! It’s wonderful to hear a success story every now and then.
After living in poverty and dealing with trauma, it’s perfectly natural for you to be leery of your newfound success. You can help alleviate some of that anxiety by getting organized and planning. Meal planning, budget planning, even household chores and scheduled exercise can offer you a sense of security.
While you’re getting organized and figuring out what works for you, don’t forget that you deserve this. You deserve a stable life and the security that comes with it! Having a reliable vehicle, a full fridge and the ability to start a little nest egg of a savings are good things!
It sounds like your change has evolved very naturally. I’m sure at times that was very frustrating for you! But look at how you’ve handled it and how you’ve grown. Can you imagine the anxiety if it all happened at once?
I firmly believe everything happens for a reason, in its own time. There are lessons in this life to be learned, and the universe isn’t going to hand our dreams over until we are good and ready.
Keep up the great work, and share your story! Inspire hope in others who need it.
