Two area mothers have organized a group aimed at getting women together to support each other in their role as mothers.
The Albert Lea Mom2Mom Breastfeeding Group meets from 2 to 3 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month at the CareAboutU Cafe in the upper level of Brookside Education Center.
“We want the community to know there’s support out there for breastfeeding mothers,” said organizer Erica Larson.
Larson said having support and encouragement can help mothers succeed at breastfeeding. She reassured mothers that the group is low-key and is organized by other mothers in similar stages of life. Mothers-to-be are also welcome.
“We have the need in Freeborn County,” she said.
A trained breastfeeding counselor is present at each meeting, along with written resources and snacks. The group is supported by the Freeborn County Breastfeeding Coalition.
Some of the topics that may be discussed at meetings include helpful strategies, breastfeeding in public, breastfeeding in the early weeks, fussy babies, going back to work and nursing attire.
Freeborn County Public Health Nurse Jennifer Donahue said the newborn clinics, which are from 12:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the breastfeeding group, have been well attended.
“Everyone who is coming has been thankful,” Donahue said.
Both events are being publicized to new mothers at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, and through the Women, Infants and Children program, along with other resources. Young children are welcome to stay with their mothers.
