MINNEAPOLIS — Accreditation for the University of Minnesota’s human research program is pending while the school makes some policy changes.
A decision on the program’s status from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs comes seven months after it released a critical report that found “many weaknesses” in the university’s efforts to protect people who participate in research experiments.
The human research program came under scrutiny following the death of Dan Markingson, a mentally ill man who committed suicide in 2004 while participating in a university study of an anti-psychotic drug.
According to a press release, in order to move to full accreditation, the university must make policy changes, including how it responds to the concerns of research subjects.
