RICHFIELD — A Minnesota police officer is on paid administrative leave during an investigation of a video that appears to show the officer pushing and striking a teen.
The Richfield Police Department said Tuesday the officer has been placed on leave pending the investigation.
The incident happened Saturday night. Nineteen-year-old Kamal Gelle said he was pulled over and given a citation for careless driving. Gelle said he then got out of his car to talk on his phone.
According to a press release, Gelle said that’s when the officer pushed him and hit him in the side of his head.
A Somali civil rights group asked for a meeting with the police chief. The department said Chief Jay Henthorne met Tuesday with Omar Jamal, chief executive of the Somali Human Rights commission, and members of the commission.
