MINNEAPOLIS — A new food pantry has opened in Minneapolis that’s for pets only.

People and Pets Together founder Kim Carrier says that if someone is having tough times financially, the shelter offers support so they can keep their pets instead of giving them up. The pantry opened in a south Minneapolis neighborhood on Sunday.

The food pantry is counting on donations from local companies as well as individuals.

According to a press release, volunteers hope to distribute 100,000 pounds of pet food in the first year. They’ll start with dog and cat food and could expand to other pets in time.

People and Pets Together has been distributing pet food to regular food pantries since 2009. Carrier says they hope to continue that effort even as they open their own space.
