To the possibility of a drone for the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.thumb.up

Feeborn County Sheriff Kurt Freitag this week said he was interested in purchasing a drone for the department.

We support his plans and hope he can find some outside grants or launch an online fundraising campaign to fund it.

A drone could assist with everything from search warrants to disaster surveillance and pursuits. It could even be used at times when a child or an elderly person is lost.

The drone would be battery-powered and would feature two cameras, one for day-use and another that is infrared.

To the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team.thumb.up

Though the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team did not win against Austin on Friday, the boys should be applauded for their efforts and for the improvements we have seen on the court this season.

The team lost a close game to Stewartville earlier in the week after what some have described as a controversial decision in the last second of the game.

To turn right back around after that game and give it their all against Austin is commendable.

Having that kind of determination will pay off. Keep up the good work, boys.

To icy roads.thumb.down

Though we recognize we haven’t had to deal with icy, snowy roads too much this year, this week brought us back to reality. There were slippery spots all over as the area saw a mix of snow and drizzle throughout the week. There wree also several crashes.

We encourage people to slow down and practice safe driving. Let’s prevent as many crashes as possible.

On a similar note, we appreciate all the work the snowplow drivers do to keep the roads as clear as possible, and we encourage them to do their best in this effort.

To the Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.thumb.up

We’re seeing it more and more where both the Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office is using social media to get the word out about things.

Whether it was information about Stalker, the new K-9 with the Sheriff’s Office, information about a missing woman from Lake Mills or information about the hit-and-run fatal crash from last month, it has been great to see the interaction with the public on Facebook.

People are using mobile devices and the Internet more and more these days, so it is a good way to reach out.

We encourage both departments to continue this practice into the future.
