Libraries offer tax options

Libraries within the Southeastern Libraries Cooperating region have been notified that the Minnesota Department of Revenue will no longer provide state tax forms and instructions to libraries and counties. The change went into effect Jan. 1 in order to ensure taxpayers are filing with the most up-to-date tax forms and instructions. Taxpayers may obtain forms and instructions from the Department of Revenue website, www.revenue.mn.state.us, or by calling 1-800-652-9094.
As a result of the increasing number of taxpayers using software to prepare their federal tax returns (95 percent electronically filed last tax season), the IRS continues to decrease the number of tax products available to public libraries. Some libraries may receive a limited supply of federal tax forms from the Internal Revenue Service.
Jennifer Harveland, communication specialist at SELCO, said while many people file electronically, there is still some demand for paper forms.
“Library staff are prepared to direct taxpayers to forms and instructions online, or to use federal and state phone numbers to request forms,” Harveland said. “Taxpayers should contact their local library for specific details about what assistance they can provide.”
Some libraries may have copies of the 1040 instruction booklet and the 2015 Tax Guide for Individuals for use in the library, or in some cases, for limited checkout. Individuals and employers may order forms from the IRS webpage or by calling 1-800-829-3676, and the IRS will deliver them by mail. Many forms and instructions are also available to view and download online.
Library staff can assist with locating and printing online tax forms, but are not able to give advice regarding the forms that taxpayers might need. In addition, some libraries have tax preparation help through community volunteers. Printing and copying is available at many libraries for a small fee. Contact your local library for details and further information.
