BLOOMINGTON — A Minnesota nonprofit has a name problem that it hasn’t been able to shake.

The International Species Information System is known across the globe as ISIS. Its website is Isis.org. But a name once associated with an ancient Egyptian goddess now has become synonymous with terrorism.

The Bloomington-based nonprofit, launched in 1974, develops software that helps zoos and aquariums in 87 countries keep track of their animal data.

But the nonprofit has heard from people who want to sign up with the Islamic State group, commonly known as ISIS. Employees have been spooked by pranks. It had to remove the large ISIS sign on the front door.

Now, the zoological software company is hunting for a new name as it seeks to rebrand itself.
