PRESTON — A New Year’s Day fire has destroyed a popular bowling alley and diner in the southeastern Minnesota town of Preston.

Co-owner Shelly Hanson reported a fire in the kitchen of B&B Olympic Bowl and Restaurant as she prepared the restaurant for opening Friday morning. She was able to get out without being hurt.

Assistant Preston Fire Chief Josh Ristau said the building is a total loss.

Ristau said the fire spread to an open attic area, causing it to escalate quickly.

Paul and Shelly Hanson have owned the bowling alley and restaurant since 1990. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
