50 years ago: 1966

Tom Bergner hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining in the New Richland High Schools  60-59 basketball win over Waldorf-Pemberton. Bergner led the Cardinals with 17 points.

The Albert Lea High School basketball team defeated Mankato 52-39. Leading scorers for the Tigers were Darrel Gavle with 16 points and Dan Doty with 12.

In Big Nine Conference hockey Albert Lea defeated Farmington 4-0 and moved into a tie with Owatonna at 4-0 for the league lead. Doyle Freemeyer scored two goals, and Gary Barb, Dick Wayne, Rick Swanson and Wayne Freemeyer one goal each for the Tigers.

Kiester defeated Elmore 30-14 in Border League wrestling. Winning matches for Kiester were Dave Olson at (95), John Halvorson (103), Jerry Flogstad (127), Stan Sabin (133), Steve Frey (165), Dean Anderson (175) and Darrell Penning (hwt).

 

25 years ago: 1991

The ALHS girls’ basketball team raised their season record to 6-4 after defeating Faribault 58-39. Pam Stoltz scored 22 points and had 14 rebounds for the Tigers.

In a North Iowa Conference basketball game Northwood-Kensett was victorious over Belmond 58-47. Doug Bott scored 22 points and Brian Lease 12 for the Vikings.

Darrin Baker scored 10 points and Terry Truebenbach had 13 rebounds for New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in their win over Medford in a Gopher Conference basketball game.

Kirstin Hugdahl scored 29 points, including her 1,000 career point, and had 17 rebounds for South Central in their 58-50 win over St. Clair.

 

10 years ago: 2006

The ALHS boys’ basketball team defeated Winona 59-51 behind 24 points for A.J. Kortz and 18 for Parker Skophammer.

Chelsey Ziebell drove the length of the court with 16 seconds left to score the winning basket for Glenville-Emmons in their 44-43 win over Hope Lutheran. Jordan VanRyswyk scored 20 points and Ashley Lau 13 for G-E.

Alex Bute scored 14 points and Anthony Wittmer added 13 points and had 14 rebounds for the Alden-Conger Knights in their 56-48 win over Grand Meadow.
