Weekend Planner: Cancer benefit planned for Alden 5th-grade teacher

A benefit for an Alden teacher suffering from cancer will be on Sunday at TB3’s in Freeborn.

Joy Bryson, a fifth-grade teacher at Alden-Conger School, was diagnosed last April with breast cancer.

The daughter of Mavis and the late L. Richard Bryson, she has since undergone treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, all while continuing to work.

The benefit runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes burger baskets, a bake sale and a children’s corner.

Supplemental funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial.

The following is a roundup of other events taking place this weekend:

 

Friday

• The Jr. Gold B Hockey Tournament will take place throughout the weekend at City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive.

• The Albert Lea Art Center All-Member Show will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 226 W. Clark St.

• The “Going Places” art exhibit will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

Sibley Elementary School students will take to the stage at 7 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Southwest Middle School for the Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre production of “Pinocchio.” The play begins at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for preschool-age children.

Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre is based in Barrett and sends two actors to schools for a week. At the beginning of the week students can audition, and by the end of the week, they will act in a play.

 

Saturday

• The Jr. Gold B Hockey Tournament will take place throughout the weekend at City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive.

• Sibley Elementary School students will perform the Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre production of “Pinocchio”at 10:30 a.m. at the Little Theatre at Southwest Middle School. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for preschool-age children.

• The Albert Lea Art Center All-Member Show will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 226 W. Clark St.

• A Fit for Kids event for children 5 and under and their parents will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Northbridge Mall. Get muscles working and chase away the winter ho-hums with this fun parent-child activity. Each week brings a new theme: Parachute play, an obstacle course, ball play and yoga adventures.

• The “Going Places” art exhibit will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway

 

Sunday

• The Jr. Gold B Hockey Tournament will take place throughout the weekend at City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive.

• The Albert Lea American Legion will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, potatoes, scrambled eggs with or without ham, sausages, fruit cup, juice, milk or coffee. Cost is $7.50, with $1 going to the youth group for your church of choice.
