Hy-Vee issues recall of Madamia nuts due to potential of being contaminated with Salmonella

Hy-Vee, Inc., based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling Hy-Vee 2-ounce macadamia nuts because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections , endocarditis and arthritis.
Hy-Vee 2-ounce macadamia nuts were distributed to all of Hy-Vee’s 240 grocery stores across its eight-state region of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The product comes in a blue-colored 2-ounce plastic bag and was sold between July 2 and Feb. 3. The product code and date information on the affected products can be found in the mid-right column on the back of the product bag, which will be labelled “Hy-Vee Macadamia Nuts 2oz/57g” The UPC code is 0 75450 13287 8 and the best by date is July 10.
To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product.
The potential for contamination was brought to Hy-Vee’s attention after the product’s supplier, Marathon Ventures, Inc., issued a voluntary recall on various retail and bulk packages containing raw macadamia nuts. The voluntary recall was issued after Salmonella positive product was found during routine product sampling.
Customers who purchased Hy-Vee 2-ounce Macadamia Nuts between July 2 and Feb. 3 should dispose of the product or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
