The city of Albert Lea could feature three electronic speed limit signs by this spring.

The Albert Lea City Council approved a resolution Monday night requesting the Minnesota Department of Transportation allow the installation of three dynamic speed limit signs.

The signs would be at the following:

Albert Lea City Engineer Steven Jahnke said the signs would be the first of their kind in Albert Lea.

He said the  signs would post the speed you are going and flash if you are speeding.

The Albert Lea Police Department started looking into purchasing the signs a year ago to have a better chance of slowing down traffic, he said.

Installing them will make people aware of how fast they are going and give them an opportunity to slow down, he said.

Fifth Councilor Larry Anderson expressed optimism for the signs.

“I think it’s going to do very well here,” Anderson said.

He specifically mentioned a speed limit sign’s location on U.S. Highway 14 between Owatonna and Rochester as proof of the success of electronic signs, and said electric signs will alert people to their speeds and that other people are also viewing it.

In other action, the council also:

• Accepted a cash donation of $90 toward Senior Center activities and $5,700 to an Albert Lea Public Library dividend to be used toward several purchases, EZ people counters replacements, tables with otterboxes, children’s digital service, Kaeser Library rulers and Albert Lea Tribune advertisements for its additional hotspot pilot program.

• Approved a resolution executing a 2016-17 Minnesota Department of Transportation grant agreement for Albert Lea Municipal Airport maintenance and operations. The state will reimburse the city for 75 percent of eligible maintenance and operations costs not reimbursed by any other source, not to exceed $60,794 per year.
