All of the area schools canceled classes today as Albert Lea and much of the surrounding area remained under a blizzard warning this morning.
Blowing snow was expected to continue through the morning hours, leading to difficult travel, including whiteout conditions at times.
Wind gusts near 40 mph were possible.
Schools canceling classes were the following:
• Albert Lea Area Schools
• United South Central Schools
• Lake Mills Community Schools
• Northwood-Kensett Community School District
• Alden-Conger Public School
• Glenville-Emmons Schools
• NRHEG School District
According to the National Weather Service, the blizzard warning was set to last until noon. It included cities of Mankato, Fairmont, Blue Earth and Albert Lea.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation as of press time advised no travel on roads west of Alden and New Richland. Roads east of those cities were listed as partially covered.
The Weather Service cautioned if people must travel, they should take a winter survival kit with them.
If people get stranded, they are encouraged to stay with their vehicle.
The forecast is expected to improve the remainder of the week with mostly sunny or partly cloudy conditions.
