ST. PAUL — The city of St. Paul will look into regulating short-term rental companies following a vote by the City Council.

The council voted Wednesday to have city staff look into whether procedures by companies such as Airbnb fit with city rules and if city codes ensure landlords, neighbors and renters are protected. City staff will also check if appropriate taxes are being collected.

Council member Chris Tolbert, who initiated the look into short-term rentals, says the city isn’t trying to stop Airbnb but that it’s a “completely unregulated area.” Staff are scheduled to bring back any recommendations by June 1.

Airbnb spokesman Christopher Nulty said in a statement that the company looks forward to “working with our community to educate St. Paul lawmakers” and ensure its community “can pay their fair share.
