Weekend Planner: Community Sew Day to make projects to give to those in need

The annual Community Sew Day, which is part of the local Shinefest mission, will take place this Saturday at the Fairlane Building at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.

The event will span from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. People looking to participate can come all day or for however long they can sew.

Participants are asked to bring a sewing machine, scissors and pins.

Sewing kits for various projects — including quilts, personal care bags, pillow cases, tissue covers, dresses, shorts and shirts — will be provided.

Sandwiches, fruit, vegetables, sweets, coffee and water will be provided.

The following is a listing of other events happening this weekend:

 

Friday

• The Rebirth of My Soul exhibit by May Ya-Ya will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• A spring flea market will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

• An aviation photography exhibit by Adam Glowaski of Ventura, Iowa, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

• An American Red Cross blood drive will be from 2 to 7 p.m. at St. Theodore Catholic Church.

• A celebration of life and silent auction for the family of United Preschool teacher Bernadette Clark will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the preschool, 709 S. U.S. Highway 69.

Clark was a teacher for 18 years at the preschool and died March 31 after suffering from an intracerebral hemorrhage to her brain.

Children are invited to come dressed in their favorite costumes for the dance. There will be Bruno’s corn dogs, Mrs. Gerry’s macaroni and cheese, a silent auction and a bake sale. There will also be a disc jockey and children’s activities.

• Jeff Lackey will perform live from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Interchange Wine & Coffee Bistro, 211 S. Broadway.

 

Saturday

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 16 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 447 will host a clothing drive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds next to the VFW bingo hall behind the Grandstand. Volunteers will be on hand to unload items.

The drive accepts clean, usable clothing, shoes, small appliances, usable furniture and glassware. All proceeds stay local to benefit veterans and local youth activities.

• Priscilla Shirer of “War Room,” who is the daughter of Christian pastor, speaker and author Tony Evans, will be part of a simulcast from 8:45 a.m. to 4:35 p.m. at Crossroads Church, 3402 Hoeger Lane, Albert Lea. Doors open at 7:45 a.m. for registration and light continental breakfast. Tickets are $15 and can be ordered at www.placeofdecision.com. Beverages and snacks will be provided. Lunch is not provided.

• The Riverland Community College auto service program’s annual spring check-up event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea campus.

This will be an opportunity for people to come and visit the auto service program, meet the students and have their vehicle checked over.

• A spring flea market will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

• An aviation photography exhibit by Adam Glowaski of Ventura, Iowa, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

• An Albert Lea National Guard reunion will be from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion, 142 N. Broadway. Reunion is for past and present members of Company G, Company A, Company D and a guest.

• The Brickside Art Show & Wine & Beer Tasting will begin at 5 p.m. at The Interchange Wine & Coffee Bistro, 211 S. Broadway. There will be complimentary wine and beer tasting at 5 p.m. with featured artist Charlotte Laxen. Live music will follow at 6 p.m. with Holly Ryks and Tim Stoneking.

 

Sunday

• American Legion Post 56, 142 N. Broadway,  will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes, scrambled eggs with or without diced ham, juice and coffee. Cost is $7.50.

• A spring flea market will be open from noon to 5 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

• The Albert Lea spring Cantori concert will be at 3 p.m. at United Methodist Church.
