HASTINGS — An Albert Lea man originally charged with third-degree murder in the overdose death of an Albert Lea man in 2015 pleaded guilty Tuesday in Dakota County District Court to second-degree manslaughter.
Dustin Chenevert, 27, was charged with providing methadone and other pain pills to 18-year-old Colton Poplow, also of Albert Lea, who died in a South St. Paul hotel room on Feb. 28, 2015.
Authorities said Poplow had taken methadone the night before, swallowing a few pills in a panic because he feared police were going to check for drugs.
According to the charges, investigators learned Poplow had bought both methadone and Dilaudid, another prescription painkiller, from Chenevert.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 8.
Second-degree manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
