ALHS baseball wins 1st district title

50 years ago: 1966
• The Albert Lea High School baseball team won its first ever District 2 title with a 4-1 win over Hayfield. Winning pitcher Dick Wayne threw a three-hitter and had 12 strike outs.
The Tigers won their first game in Region 1 with a 1-0 victory over Faribault. Dick Wayne repeated his title performance in the District 2 game with 12 strike outs and, again, only allowed three hits.
Trailing 3-1 after 6 innings, the Tigers scored three runs to win the Region 1 title 4-3 over Winona and won a trip to the Minnesota state baseball tournament.
Once again, Dick Wayne was the winning pitcher.
• Wells High School defeated Waldorf-Pemberton 2-1 to win the Region 2 baseball tournament and a trip to the State tournament. Jerry Moja was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats.
25 years ago: 1991
• In Region 2A baseball, Luverne defeated South Central 3-0. Losing pitcher Jon Goerish allowed only two hits for the Warriors.
• Named to the 1991 All-Big Nine Conference Baseball Team from ALHS were Derek Fleek, Scott Johnston and Aaron Davis.
Receiving Honorable Mention were Travis Olson and Steve VanMaldeghem for the Tigers.
• In its season-opening baseball game the Albert Lea VFW team defeated Austin 10-3. Jay Kammerer had two hits and drove in three runs for A.L. and Mike Piechowski pitched the win.
• The Albert Lea Elks 12 and under soccer team defeated Lakeville 7-0.
Scoring goals for A.L. were Zach Flugum (2), Casey Burns, Caleb Flugum, Jade Riskedahl, Seth Larson and Ryan McMormick.
10 years ago: 2006
• The United South Central/Alden-Conger girls’ track team finished tied for 9th place in Class A at the Minnesota state tournament. Freshman Ciara Christenson placed second in the 300-meter hurdles. Senior Becca Bryson took third place in the triple jump. The 4×200 relay team of Bryson, Andrea Allis, Rebecca Leland and Christenson finished in fourth place.
• Mike Severson of Albert Lea scored a hole-in-one on the 238-yard 12th hole at Green Lea Golf Course in Albert Lea.
