A Miami, Florida, man charged in connection to having dozens of cloned credit cards earlier this year in Albert Lea was placed on probation for up to three years Thursday in Freeborn County District Court.
Emilio Suarez, 51, was sentenced to a stayed sentence of one year and one day in prison. He was given 109 days in jail and received credit for 109 days served.
He pleaded guilty to one count of receiving or possessing financial transaction card fraud last month.
Suarez was arrested in March after he was found in a rental vehicle with dozens of cloned credit cards and about $5,000 of products purchased with the cards. There was everything from an iPhone, a Go-Pro camera, a computer, a drone, alcohol, cologne and gift cards.
He had reportedly fled from Hy-Vee after using a fraudulent card at both the grocery store and the gas station.
He reportedly victimized residents of Rochester, Mankato, Fairmont, Apple Valley, Lakeville and other communities and was believed to have been part of a larger credit card fraud scheme across the country.
As part of a plea agreement with the Freeborn County Attorney’s Office, a second count of financial transaction card fraud was dismissed.
Suarez has been previously convicted of first-degree misdemeanor fraud, felony possession of a stolen driver’s license, felony illegal use of credit cards and felony possession of a forged driver’s license in Florida.
