What barriers need to be torn down?

Many small towns across America, including Albert Lea, are experiencing declines in population and business growth. In 1990 our population was 18,375. In 2013 it fell to 17,815. Why is that? As those of us who have lived here all our lives know, we have a great community!

There are many factors that contribute to a town not growing, including geography, access to services and climate (both business and weather) to name just a few. But arguably the most important ingredient to growth is desire: Does the community want and value growth?

I believe growth is not just good but vital and something we must strive to achieve. A vibrant, growing community creates an environment where our children can thrive, workers can prosper and services (retail, medical, recreation) are widely available. In short, a growing community is a win for everyone.

To be a destination for people and businesses, Albert Lea has to answer “yes” to two important questions: 1) Do we want to grow? and 2) Are we prepared to do what it takes to foster that growth?

A first step is understanding what isn’t working today. I’d like to see business leaders, developers, builders, Realtors, city officials and others get together and talk openly about what is preventing development here. Why aren’t more businesses growing here? Why aren’t more houses, condos and apartments being built? What barriers need to be torn down?

I have my theories, and I’m sure others do too. But let’s get the actual answers from the folks who make decisions on where to build and where to locate. Together we can make the changes needed to ensure we are growing and vibrant for decades to come.
