Motorists on Interstate 35 and Highway 14 near Owatonna will encounter daily lane closures at bridges beginning Monday while crews locate a fiber optic line, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The lane closures are needed to provide equipment access for the utility location work near the Union Pacific Railroad at bridges on I-35 and Highway 14. If work goes faster than anticipated, the closures will be taken down earlier.
The work is the starting point for 10 bridge replacements on I-35 and Highway 14 that will take place over the next two years.
On I-35, the location is about one mile south of the I-35-Highway 14 interchange south of Owatonna. The Highway 14 location is just east of the interchange.
The lane closures and locations are as follows:
• Monday, northbound I-35 left lane
• Tuesday, northbound I-35 left lane
• Wednesday, southbound right lane
• Thursday, southbound right lane
• Friday,, eastbound right lane, State Highway 14
• Friday, westbound right lane, State Highway 14
The lane closures will be set up at 6:30 a.m. and be taken down by 5:30 p.m. each day.
Construction of the crossover lanes to move traffic around the bridges under construction will take place after Labor Day.
Construction on the bridges is scheduled to begin in April 2017 for three bridges on southbound I-35 and two bridges on eastbound Highway 14 near Owatonna.MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
