EAGAN — Three suburban Twin Cities officers are off the streets while a deadly police shooting is investigated.
Eagan police said a 37-year-old man who was sitting in his car firing a handgun toward an apartment building was killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers about noon Sunday.
Eagan police spokesman Aaron Machtemes said the three officers are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases. He said it’s not yet clear how many officers fired their weapons.
Neighbors at the Forest Ridge apartments said the man who was killed, Justin Kulhanek-Derks, lived at the complex with his teenage daughter. According to a press release, Laura and Ken Scott said their daughter is a good friend of Kulhanek-Derks’ daughter.
Laura Scott said Kulhanek-Derks had been despondent because of a recent breakup with his fiancee.
