MINNEAPOLIS — Union negotiators and Allina Health resume talks Tuesday after nurses rejected a contract offer last week and authorized an open-ended strike.

According to a press release, leaders of the Minnesota Nurses Association, which represents 4,800 nurses at five Allina hospitals in the Twin Cities, met Saturday to prepare. They have to give Allina 10 days’ notice before a strike.

Allina has sought to eliminate four union-backed health plans and transfer nurses to the same plans as other employees in hopes of saving $10 million annually.

It recently offered to discontinue only two of the union plans, though nurses would bear most of the cost increases to keep the remaining plans afloat.

Nurses want to keep their current plans with their low-deductibles, given their high rate of workplace illnesses and injuries.
