SHAKOPEE — A family vacation has turned deadly for a Shakopee family. 

The Bondarenko family was vacationing on the Gulf of Mexico in Panama City, Florida, when one member began having trouble in the rough water. Authorities had posted a red flag warning, advising against swimming.

Anastasiya Bondarenko said her husband, Dmitry, lost his life rescuing the relative Wednesday. She said her husband was an avid sportsman, a hard worker and a family man and died a hero.

A funeral is planned for next week in Shakopee.
