WELLS — Activities have already begun in the annual Kernel Days celebration in Wells.

The Five Sisters Project will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. today in downtown Wells. At 8 p.m. there will also be a glow walk at Half Moon Park. The event will benefit the United South Central backpack program.

The festivities will pick back up on Friday. The Wells Depot Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wells Federal Bank will host a free lunch in its parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the local Lions Club will sponsor 55-plus bingo from 2 to 4 p.m. at Broadway Apartments; and at 5:30 p.m. the third annual alumni baseball game will take place at Thompson Park.

Half Moon Park will also host a number of activities on Friday. At 5 p.m. Lions Bingo, food stands and the beer garden will open. Wells Assembly of God Church will host gaga ball and the Steve Klingbeil Gospel Singers will perform.

Free ice cream will be provided by People’s State Bank. A volleyball tournament and tractor races will begin at 6 p.m. at the park and will be followed by speaker Al Batt at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m., KBEW dance DJs will provide entertainment on the Bevcomm stage and the evening will conclude with fireworks at 10 p.m.

Giant inflatables will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Half Moon Park.

The Maple Valley Classic Car Show will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday on Broadway in Wells. The Wells Depot Museum will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will host John’s Concertina Music at 1 p.m. Jim Lawrence Orchestra will play at 3 p.m. at Parkview Care Center.

Following the distribution of awards, the classic car cruise will take place at 3:30 p.m. The Kernel Days Parade will begin at 5 p.m. on Broadway. Downtown Wells will also host the Wells Area Jaycees Dance at 9 p.m. The band Pop Rocks will perform at the event.

Half Moon Park will continue to be a busy place, too. At 8 a.m. volleyball and softball tournaments will begin. A farm implement and auto expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The morning hours will host a cupcake contest from 9 to 9:45 a.m. and a duct tape contest from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Bingo, food stands, the beer garden, gaga ball and a kids power pedal tractor pull are all scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday. The Reptile Amphibian Discovery Zoo Show will begin at 11 a.m. The UPDS Dance Showcase will grace the Bevcomm Stage at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a Coins in the Sand Hunt at 2 p.m. Many performers will be at the park as well. Brian Wendling, juggler and comedian, will perform at 2:30 p.m. and after the parade the Bevcomm Stage will host Jeff Meyer at 6:30 p.m. and Brett Feist at 7 p.m. A Home Run Derby is also scheduled at 7 p.m. at the park.

The weekend’s activities will come to an end on Sunday. From 7 a.m. to noon, the Wells Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a pancake breakfast. Softball tournaments will continue at 8 a.m. at Half Moon Park. At 10 a.m., Wells Assembly of God Church will provide church services at Half Moon Park. The Wells Depot Museum will be open from noon to 4 p.m.
