ST. PAUL — Four people have been charged in the death of a Minnetonka High School student during an alleged robbery in St. Paul.

Ramsey County prosecutors said 16-year-old Samantha Burnette was fatally shot after fighting back when her sister was pistol-whipped in an alley Sunday. The prosecutors have accused Kalisa Chardale Smith, 29, of arranging for her ex-boyfriend to rob her friends.

The suspects charged Tuesday in the incident are Smith, who was friends with Burnette’s sister; Smith’s ex-boyfriend, Christopher Calloway, 29; and Calloway’s friends, Davonte Bob, 24 and Vincent Harris, 29. They’re each charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated robbery.

According to the criminal complaint, Burnette, her sister Brittany Rock, Smith and another woman were driving around and drinking on the morning of Sept. 25. Rock was driving, and Smith was in the front passenger seat. Burnette was asleep in the back seat with the other friend.

Smith said she had to meet someone, so they drove to an alley on Sims Avenue and Smith left the car. Calloway allegedly jumped into the car, pulled a gun and attempted to rob the passengers.

Burnette used a liquor bottle to strike Calloway in the head after he assaulted Rock, which led to Burnette being fatally shot by the robbers.

According to the charges, Smith allegedly told police that Calloway had asked her if the women in the car had money, and she said they did. He talked about taking their money, and “Smith said she didn’t agree with it, but it was what he was going to do,” the charges said.

Brittany Rock, Burnette’s sister said no prison time the defendants face can bring back her sister.

“They don’t understand the amount of pain and agony they’ve caused me,” Rock wrote Tuesday. “. I’m so torn apart right now . it all just doesn’t make sense.”

Calloway’s bail was set at $2 million and Smith received $1 million bail. Bobo and Harris will make their first court appearance Wednesday.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the suspects have attorneys.
