Newman beats Lake Mills

After earning a shutout one week ago, Lake Mills took on Newman Catholic and looked to stay perfect on the young season.
But the Bulldogs allowed just a few too many big plays, and it led to their demise and a 38-23 loss Friday night.
A field goal by Gabe Irons gave Lake Mills a 17-14 lead, but Newman Catholic responded when Austin Eckenrod found Ian Holmgaard for a 13-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion made it 22-17.
Then, Newman Catholic’s Josh Fitzgerald took a kickoff back 91 yards to make it 30-17.
Cael Boehmer and Slade Sifuentes would connect for a 49-yard touchdown for Lake Mills, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Bulldogs.
“We did a great job of stopping the run tonight,” said Bulldogs coach Bill Brynes. “But big plays hurt us, especially that kickoff return for a touchdown. We saw a lot of good things in this game, though.”
Sifuents finished the game with six receptions for 145 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs.
Lake Mills will be on the road against Belmond-Klemme Friday.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
