Sarah Stultz: Education pages to highlight A.L. students
Published 9:51 am Tuesday, September 13, 2016
Sarah Stultz is the managing editor of the Tribune. Her column appears every Tuesday.
The Tribune began a new section in Sunday’s newspaper focused on promoting happenings in Albert Lea Area Schools.
In case you missed it, there were things such as standout students at both the high school and elementary levels, a column from a principal, lunch menus, a calendar and other photos of things happening in the classrooms.
We here at the Tribune believe there are lots of good things happening in the schools, so we wanted to use our platform to let you know about them, too. This will be in addition to our newspaper articles prepared by staff members about issues of importance within the district.
The standout students can be students who are excellent musicians or artists or who set a good example to younger students, to name a few examples. The possibilities are endless.
We hope to continue these special education pages each Sunday in the newspaper, and we hope parents and community members alike can use the information to see what’s happening in the district.
Speaking for myself as a parent who has had a child in the district, I know it can sometimes be challenging to keep track of what’s happening each day at your child’s school. At the elementary level, teachers do a good job of sending home paperwork about events and other happenings, but it can sometimes be a lot of paperwork. From what I’ve heard from other parents with older children, there is significantly less paperwork at the high school level.
We are getting the information for the calendar from the Albert Lea Area Schools website. If you have something you want in the calendar or have another question, please contact Brittany Voigt, public information coordinator for the school district.
We appreciate Voigt’s dedication to collecting this school information and the work of the leaders at each school for sending in photos of happenings at your schools. We couldn’t do this without your help.
Publisher Crystal Miller and I have wanted to implement this for quite some time, and we are glad to see it finally become a reality.
For other area schools interested in highlighting your students, please give me a call at 507-379-3433 or email me at sarah.stultz@albertleatribune.com. We hope to set up pages for other schools in the future.
