Weekend Planner: Kiester’s Farming of Yesteryear festival a weekend highlight

Farming of Yesteryear, the 33rd annual threshing festival in Kiester, will take place Saturday and Sunday in this rural community in Faribault County. 

Gates open at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Events throughout the day include bingo at 9 a.m., Al Batt at 10:30 a.m., a parade at 1 p.m. and a soup supper at 5 p.m. Performances this day include Sig’s Band at 2 p.m. and Chris Von Arx at 3:30 p.m.

On Sunday, events kick off with a church service at 7 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Other festivities that day include a children’s pedal pull at noon, a parade at 1:30 p.m. and performances from the Dirksen family at 10:30 a.m. and the Bee Kays at 2:30 p.m.

On both days there will be rope making, threshing and corn shelling, as well as horse and tractor plowing, to name a few. People will also be able to shop in the country store and at a flea market and farmers market.

Tractors and machinery will be on display.

Admission is $7. Children 12 and under are free.

The following is a roundup of other events taking place this weekend:

Friday

• The Shangri-La music festival will take place all day at Harmony Park.

• The Cliff and Carol Rask art collection will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will host a fall bazaar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 320 W. College St., Albert Lea. Cost is $7. Meal includes vegetable beef soup, sloppy joe, pie and coffee. There will be a raffle drawing for a quilt. Raffle tickets are one for $5 or three for $10. The drawing will be at 1 p.m.

• The “This Show Rocks” exhibit by artist Susanne Crane will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

Saturday

• The Ryan “Pie” Truesdell ninth memorial softball tournament will be all day at Snyder Field.

The event is held in memory of Truesdell, who died Aug. 14, 2007. He was an avid sports fanatic who enjoyed many sports, including softball. The tournament raises money for area youth sports.

The Shangri-La music festival will take place all day at Harmony Park.

• The Freeborn County Historical Museum lecture series will be at 9 a.m. The lecture is titled “Living a Mayberry Life” and will focus on the history of the “Andy Griffith Show” and a review of the cast members that one Albert Lean has met over the years.

• The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon at the Northbridge Mall.

• Ruby’s Pantry will be open from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Assembly of God Church, 1540 South Shore Drive. Those who participate are asked to bring $20 and two baskets for their food.

• The Cliff and Carol Rask art collection exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The Fall Czech Festival, featuring Mollie B from the Polka Party on RFD-TV, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. at the Brick Hall, 17509 850th Ave., in rural Myrtle.

Festivities Saturday include a silent auction from noon to 4 p.m. and Mollie B’s music from 1 to 5 p.m.

There will also be door prizes and a bake sale along with pulled pork, brats, kolache, pop and beer.

Two-day tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. They can be purchased at Hunters Bar, Geneva Bar & Grill or Cafourek Insurance. Proceeds benefit Brick Hall restoration and care.

• An artist’s reception for the “This Show Rocks” exhibit by artist Susanne Crane will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative.

• Alden American Legion Post 404 will host a steak fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Menu includes 10-ounce ribeye, baked potato, cole slaw and garlic toast. Cost is $13.

• The Southern Gateway Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will host its 26th annual banquet. The event will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by a dinner at 7 p.m., all at the American Legion. Cost is $55 for adults, with a spouse $25. Children 17 and under are $20.

• National Theatre Live’s performance of “One Man, Two Guvnors” will be broadcast live in high definition at 7 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

Sunday

• The Ryan “Pie” Truesdell Tournament continues all day at Snyder Field.

The Shangri-La music festival will take place all day at Harmony Park.

• The Fall Czech Festival continues at the Brick Hall in rural Myrtle.

Events Sunday include a church service with Mollie B and the Rev. Jim Krikava from the Czech Republic at 10:30 a.m. and music from 1 to 3 p.m.

A Czech meal will be available for purchase after the service.

• American Legion Post 56 will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes, scrambled eggs with or without diced ham, juice and coffee. Cost is $7.

• An open house for the Cliff and Carol Rask art collection exhibit will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St. The exhibit will be open through Oct. 15.
