A.L. cross country team wins Big Nine

50 years ago: 1966
• The Wells Wildcats High School football team raised its league record to 5-1 after defeating Tracy 32-29. Leading Wells was Pete Hochreiter, scoring four touchdowns.
• Winning the Big Nine Conference cross country title was the Albert Lea High School team. The Tigers defeated Mankato 32-71. Brenden O’Brian placed third and Jim Parry eighth for the Tigers.
• Wells won the District 5 cross country title with 31 points to 42 by Blue Earth and 47 by Fairmont. Lewis Jones placed third, Perry Jones fourth and Dan Fellows fifth for the Wildcats.
• New Richland moved into second place in the Gopher Conference with a 4-1 record after defeating Waterville 19-6. Tom Bergner rushed for 95 yards for the Cardinals.
25 years ago: 1991
• The United South Central High School girls’ tennis team won the Region 2A title and advanced to the Minnesota state tournament. USC defeated Martin County West 5-0 in the quarterfinal game, Blue Earth 4-1 in the semifinal round and won the title 4-1 over Fairmont.
• The ALHS girls’ volleyball team raised its season record to 6-3 after defeating the Austin Packers 3-1 by scores of 15-7, 6-15, 19-17 and 15-6. Laura Bisek had 14 kills for the Tigers.
• The Minnesota Twins won the American League playoff series 4-1 after defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5. Kirby Puckett of the Twins was named the Most Valuable Player in the series.
10 years ago: 2006
• The Fifth Minnesota Golf Association Team Championship, held at Dakota Ridge Golf Club in Morton, was won by the Albert Lea team of Mick Hockinson, Phil Schmidt, Andy Petersen and Chris Baas.
• In the opening round of Section 2A high school soccer, the ALHS boys’ team defeated Waconia 4-0. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Zack McGinnis (2), Filipe Ambriz and Josh Svendaon.
• After falling behind two games to none, the Glenville-Emmons volleyball team rebounded to win the game 3-2. Ashley Lau had 20 kills, Jordan VanRyswyk 14 kills and Molly Kral had 20 digs for the Wolverines.
