A.L. football team crushes Mankato

50 years ago: 1966

• The Albert Lea High School football team was victorious in its Homecoming game 33-14 over Mankato. Jim Nelson and Erik Oslund each scored two touchdowns and quarterback Chuck Slette added one more.   

• The Bricelyn High School football team defeated Frost 41-26 to lead the Border League with a 3-0 record. The Braves were led by Jim Sabin with four touchdowns and Warren Peterson with two touchdowns.

• Bob Harang gained 145 yards on 19 carries for the Lake Mills football team in their 33-7 win over Northwood-Kensett. Harang scored three touchdowns, Maury Hope and Tom Westeng one each for the Bulldogs.

• A home run in the ninth inning by Tony Oliva gave pitcher Jim Kaat his 25th season win and the Minnesota Twins a 1-0 victory.

25 years ago: 1991

• The ALHS volleyball team improved to a 3-1 record after defeating Waseca 3-0 by scores of 16-14, 15-10 and 15-8. Laura Bisek had 17 kills for the Tigers.

The Alden-Conger volleyball team shut out Glenvile-Emmons 3-0 by scores of 15-0, 15-8 and 15-4. Renae Fullmuth was a perfect 7 for 7 serving.

• Quarterback Chris Biushlack completed 8 of 12 passes for 77 yards and Joe Mutchler rushed for 52 yards in the United South Central’s 21-14 football win over New Ulm. They raised their season mark to 4-1.

• The Minnesota Twins clinched a tie for the Western Division baseball title after defeating Toronto 5-0. Pitcher Jack Morris of the Twins threw a 6 hitter for his 18th win.

10 years ago: 2006

• The ALHS volleyball team defeated USC 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-10 and 25-14. Annika Smed had 11 kills and Kat Ladwig had 24 assists for the tigers.

• New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva  raised their Gopher Conference volleyball record to 4-3 after defeating Mankato Loyola 3-0 by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-23. Alysa Braaten had eight kills for the Panthers.

• April Kosuge had 16 assists for the G-E volleyball team in their 3-0 defeat of A-C.
