Albert Lea finishes 9th at Big 9 Conference meet in Rochester

The Albert Lea girls’ swimming and diving team competed in the Big Nine Conference meet Friday and Saturday in Rochester.

The Tigers came away with a ninth-place finish, scoring 121 points. Rochester Mayo won the meet by a landslide, notching 501.5 points. Northfield finished second with 244.5 points.

Emily Taylor was a bright spot for the Tigers in the 50-yard freestyle. She showed the whole Big Nine Conference what she was about when she won the event with a time of 25.18, beating Faribault’s Megan Gehrke by .04 seconds. Taylor also competed in the 100 breaststroke and came in third place with a time of 1:10.20.

Eighth-grader Jaeda Koziolek won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.05, beating a host of juniors and seniors in the process, including Mankato West’s Rachel Phinney by .06 seconds. She also competed in the 200 IM and finished ninth with a time of 2:24.82.

In relay action, the team of Natalie Nafzger. Lydia Boorsma, Taylor and Koziolek came in seventh place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.04.

Lexie Simon , Jill Peterson, Alana Skarstad and Taylor made up the team that took ninth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.94.

And in one of the final races, Skarstad, Koziolek, Nafzger and Boorsma finished in 10th place in the 400 freestyle.
