Albert Lea sends 2 to state
The Albert Lea boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the 1AA Section meet Thursday afternoon in Owatonna.
Two Tigers claimed spots in the state tournament — Carson Goodell for the boys and Autumn Muilenburg for the girls.
Goodell finished in eighth place with a great finish in the last 400 meters where he beat three runners. The difference between Goodell and runners nine through 11 was .3 seconds.
Goodell finished the race with a time of 16:34.4
“This was, by far, (Carson’s) most complete race,” said Tigers coach Jim Haney. “He was at his best when he needed to be. His experience and strength paid off in the last stretch of the race.”
Leo Olveda took 33rd with a time of 17:10 and Grant Herfindahl came in 44th with a time of 17:27. Jayden Douglas finished 47th with a time of 17:29 and JV Moreno came in 69th with a time of 17:47.
Muilenburg will head to the state meet, as she capped off her season with an 11th-place finish in a time of 19:10.6.
“(Autumn) has been so consistent all season and all of her hard work paid off Thursday,” Haney said. “It is so much fun to see a runner who has trained so hard to see her goals coming true.”
For Goodell, it will be his second time at the state meet. He finished 91st in 2015.
For Muilenburg, this will be her first time at the state meet.
The state meet will be held Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College.
